About 8.1 per cent of the adult population in Malaysia, that’s 1.7 million people, have risk factors for Diabetes, Hypertension, and High cholesterol, the main non-communicable diseases.

According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019 by the Ministry of Health (MOH), the prevalence rate of Diabetes in adults has increased in Malaysia from 13.4 per cent in 2015 to 18.3 per cent in 2019, with diabetes defined as having sugar levels 7.0 mmol/L or above.

An MOH official who presented the findings said NHMS 2019 had used a different blood sugar level to define diabetes compared to the NHMS 2015, which found 17.5 per cent diabetes prevalence in adults, to follow international standards.

An estimated 3.9 million adults in Malaysia aged 18 and above had diabetes as of last year, higher than 3.5 million in 2015. The NHMS 2019 survey found that 49 per cent of people with diabetes had never been examined or diagnosed with the chronic disease.

Diabetes Awareness

What is Diabetes Mellitus?
  • It is a condition where the Glucose (sugar) present in the bloodstream is higher than the normal range.
  • Although the liver and muscles produce some amount, most of the glucose is provided by the food we eat. The glucose is then carried to all the blood cells of the body with the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the Pancreas; the organ situated next to the stomach.
Types of Diabetes
  • In general, the pancreas release insulin into the blood cells basis the blood sugar level. However, in certain cases, the body is unable to produce insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or efficiently use the insulin produced (Type 2 diabetes). In such conditions, the cells don’t get the glucose needed and the same remains present in the bloodstream, thus causing high blood sugar levels.

Please remember
  • Blood Glucose levels can be easily monitored with the help of a device called glucometer. All one needs to do is provide a tiny drop of blood from the tip of the finger and place it on the test strip inserted in the glucometer. You will be able to assess your present Glucose readings in seconds. It is best to keep records by an app rather than a book.
